Fixing Deep Scratches and Cracks
Explore our step-by-step guide to effectively fix deep scratches or cracks restore the original beauty of your solid wood furniture.
Cracks can occur due to humidity or extreme conditions, but with the right repair techniques, your furniture can look as good as new.
1. Sand the Area: Sand the deep scratch or crack and the area approximately 10 cm around it with coarse sandpaper along the grain until the scratch is no longer visible.
2. Clean the Crack: Gently scrape the crack clean of any excess fibers with a plastic scraper (or similar item). Do this gently to avoid creating extra scratches.
3. Fill with Wax: Rub the wax over the scratch or crack until filled. If needed, gently remove excess wax with a plastic scraper afterward. If the scratch or crack is too wide or deep, heat the end of the wax stick with a lighter and let the wax drip into the crack.
In either case, let the wax dry for about 20 minutes. If you are unsure whether the wax is dry, touch it gently with your finger. You are good to go when it is no longer sticky.
4. Smooth the Area: Follow with finer sandpaper to smooth the area. Be sure to remove all dust before moving on to the next step.
5. Apply Oil: Pour a small amount of the same type of oil originally applied to the wooden surface onto a cotton cloth. For clean hands and to prevent them from getting sticky, we suggest wearing rubber gloves.
6. Rub in the Oil: Gently rub the oil into the wood along the grain, covering the treated area. Allow the oil to set for 3-5 minutes, but no longer to avoid stickiness. Remove any excess oil with a clean cotton cloth, again following the grain.
7. Allow to Cure: Let the treated area cure by leaving it to dry for 24 hours. This ensures the oil sets properly on the treated area.
